PowCount builds its forecasts from two global weather models. These are their attributions and terms of use.

How we compute snowfall

  1. After each model run (ECMWF at 00 and 12 UTC; GFS every 6 hours) we download precipitation, temperature, wind and the vertical temperature profile around each resort.
  2. Each field is interpolated to the resort and the temperature is estimated at base, mid and top. The snow line sits about 300 m below the 0 °C level.
  3. Precipitation above the snow line turns into snow with a density that depends on temperature: about 8 cm per 10 mm near 0 °C and up to 18 cm at −12 °C.
  4. Days 1–10 blend ECMWF (60 %) and GFS (40 %); from day 11 both weigh the same and the forecast is shown as a trend.
